Ben Stokes is once again wearing the England ODI uniform. Stokes has been selected for England’s team for their upcoming ODI series against New Zealand.
Stokes, the Player of the Match in the 2019 World Cup final, announced his retirement from the ODI format in July of last year, shortly after taking over as the Test captain. He cited the fragility of his body and the demanding schedule as reasons why playing all three forms had become “unsustainable” for him. Following the England team management’s request , Stokes decided to reverse his retirement.
In Test cricket, Stokes will continue to lead England. However, there is a chance for him to return to the 50-over format because England doesn’t have any Test cricket scheduled until January 2024. Relevent to mention here that Stokes was not chosen for the T20I series against New Zealand.
The two white-ball teams for England’s four-game ODI and T20I series against New Zealand have been announced. Gus Atkinson, who has never played internationally, has been selected for both squads and receives his first call-up. John Turner receives his first call-up as well, however he was just chosen for the T20Is. Josh Tongue, who just made his debut on the international stage in the Ashes series, will also play in the T20I format.
“The return of Ben Stokes only adds to that quality with his match-winning ability and leadership. I am certain that every fan will enjoy seeing him back in an England ODI shirt again,” said Luke Wright, England Men’s National Selector.
