Mumbai: Marking his debut in Sky Force alongside Akshay Kumar, Veer Pahariya steps into the role of Squadron Leader Ajjamada Boppayya Devayya, a Maha Vir Chakra recipient celebrated for his valour during the 1965 Indo-Pak War. The actor reveals the intense preparation that went into portraying the martyred hero.
Pahariya, who studied cinema extensively while working behind the scenes, spent over three years delving into Devayya’s life. “Playing a character of such magnitude was daunting. Devayya’s story is inspiring, but portraying him authentically on screen was a challenge. I reminded myself that if I gave it my all, this film could inspire a generation to consider joining the armed forces,” he shared.
The young actor visited Air Force bases in Lohegaon, Suratgarh, Delhi, Pathankot, and Gwalior, where he interacted with fighter pilots to understand their experiences. Additionally, he met Devayya’s family, including his 90-year-old wife, Sundari Devayya, and their daughters, Smitha and Preetha. “His family shared personal anecdotes that helped me bring his character to life. He loved photography, excelled at golf, and had a rebellious streak. We incorporated these aspects into the film,” Pahariya said.
The emotional preparation was equally demanding. “Understanding a man driven by passion, who prioritised his country above all, was deeply moving. I worked with acting coaches who guided me throughout this journey.”
The film’s climax features an aerial dogfight that culminates in Devayya’s ultimate sacrifice. Pahariya described it as the most challenging scene. “In the cockpit, with my face covered, I had to convey vulnerability, courage, and passion solely through my eyes. After completing the final shot, I held my directors and cried—for the man and the sacrifice he made for his country.”
Sky Force, releasing on 24 January, aims to pay tribute to an unsung hero of Indian history while inspiring audiences with his legacy.
