Jammu: Senior Handwara legislator, Sajad Lone, has initiated a formal resolution to remove the Speaker of the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly, citing what he terms “undemocratic behaviour” and persistent violations of parliamentary procedures.
The resolution, submitted under Rule 215(A) of the Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business, has stirred political debate across the region, pointing to a growing rift within the legislative set-up.
Addressed to the Secretary of the Legislative Assembly, the resolution highlights mounting concerns among opposition members regarding the Speaker’s alleged refusal to permit debate on an adjournment motion and his dismissal of a resolution concerning the Waqf Amendment, both brought forward by opposition legislators.
“This step has been taken in response to the Speaker’s repeated rejection of legitimate legislative procedures, including disallowing debate on pressing matters. His actions have eroded the democratic ethos of the Assembly,” the letter states.
Sajad Lone is not alone in this significant move. He is joined by Mir Mohammad Fayaz, MLA from Kupwara and Rafiq Ahmad Khan, MLA from Tral, among others. Their collective backing reflects a united front among opposition members who feel marginalised in the current legislative climate.
