Omar Abdullah attributes Waqf Bill misstep to technical error, renews Statehood plea

The Waqf Bill has recently sparked widespread debate across the Union Territory, with various regional parties voicing concerns over perceived efforts to centralise control of religious endowments. While acknowledging the legitimacy of these concerns, Omar stressed the importance of procedural accuracy to ensure the matter is dealt with effectively.

Srinagar: National Conference Vice President and former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Monday attributed the recent mishandling of the Waqf Bill in the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly to a technical error, while reiterating his party’s longstanding demand for the restoration of statehood to the region.

Speaking to reporters during the inauguration of a bridge linking remote villages in Budgam and Pulwama districts, Omar explained, “The Speaker may have permitted a discussion on the Waqf Bill, but regrettably, our members erred by tabling it as an adjournment motion.”

He clarified that adjournment motions are generally reserved for issues concerning the functioning of the government. “The Waqf Bill, however, was legislated by the Government of India in Parliament. Therefore, it ought to have been raised through a different procedural mechanism,” he stated.

Turning his attention to broader political matters, Omar once again urged the Government of India to act on its commitment to restore Jammu and Kashmir’s statehood. “This is the opportune moment for the Centre to honour its promise. The people have waited patiently for too long,” he remarked.

The former Chief Minister made these remarks after inaugurating a bridge that connects remote parts of Budgam and Pulwama. He noted that the project was sanctioned during his tenure in 2014. “I am pleased to see this bridge completed. It will undoubtedly bring relief and improved access to the residents of these areas,” he added.
