Sopore: In a strong move against the illegal extraction of sand from forests and pastures, Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) Sopore, Shabir Ahmad Raina, has announced strict action against those involved in the so-called “sand mafia.”

Raina stated that he has held discussions with officials from the Forest and Geology & Mining departments to formulate a strategy for tackling the issue. “A dedicated team will be constituted to monitor and curb the unchecked sand extraction in the region. Those involved in these illegal activities will be taught a lesson,” he asserted.
The ADC expressed serious concern over the environmental damage and disruption caused by illegal mining, which he described as having become a “mafia” operation. “We are committed to ending this menace soon,” he added.
He also noted that tractor drivers involved in the transport of illegally mined sand often drive recklessly during both day and night hours, creating panic among local residents. “We have received complaints from citizens who fear for their safety due to overspeeding tractors,” Raina said.
Authorities have assured that those involved in the sand mafia will be identified and brought to justice in the coming days. The administration has appealed to the public to report any suspicious activity related to sand extraction.
