Srinagar: The Meteorological Department on Wednesday issued a fresh weather advisory for Jammu and Kashmir, predicting widespread rainfall activity over the next few days. The advisory warns of light to moderate rain and thunderstorms across the Union Territory, with heavy to very heavy rainfall expected at isolated to scattered locations, particularly in the Jammu Division, over the next 48 hours.
According to Director MET, Dr Mukhtar Ahmad, several districts including Poonch, Rajouri, Ramban, Reasi, Udhampur Jammu, and Kathua are likely to experience intense showers between July 23 and 24. “A few parts of the Kashmir Division may also witness moderate to heavy rainfall during this period,” he added.
The department further forecasts that from July 25 to 27, the weather will improve with mainly hot and humid conditions prevailing across most areas. During this relatively stable period, only brief spells of rain are expected at isolated places.
However, another wet spell is expected to follow from July 28 to 30, with intermittent light to moderate rain and thundershowers across the region. The intensity is expected to be higher in the Jammu region, especially during the late-night and early-morning hours.
In view of the anticipated weather, the MET department has cautioned the public and administration about the potential risk of flash floods, landslides, mudslides and shooting stones in hilly and vulnerable areas. A rise in water levels in rivers, streams, and nallahs is also expected. Waterlogging may occur in low-lying and poorly drained urban areas.
Farmers have been advised to make use of the relatively dry spell between July 25 and 27 to carry out agricultural activities safely. The department also urged residents, travelers, and authorities to stay alert and take necessary precautions during the rainy spell.
