Srinagar: Vice-President of India C P Radhakrishnan on Thursday said Jammu and Kashmir is entering a “new era of peace, progress and prosperity” as he experienced the pristine beauty of Dal Lake during his maiden official visit to the Union Territory.
Radhakrishnan, who arrived in Srinagar on Wednesday evening on a two-day tour to attend the 21st convocation of the University of Kashmir as chief guest, took an early morning cruise on the iconic Dal Lake today and was visibly captivated by the region’s scenic splendour.
In a social media post, the Vice-President described witnessing the timeless charm and “breathtaking natural beauty” of the lake and Srinagar’s surroundings. He said he was deeply impressed by the improved infrastructure and enhanced connectivity across the Union Territory.
The Vice-President credited the local administration’s focus on eco-tourism and environmental preservation for boosting tourism while fostering peace and growth in the region. “These initiatives have not only boosted tourism but have also ushered in a new era of peace, progress and prosperity in Jammu and Kashmir,” he added.
Radhakrishnan was received at the Srinagar airport by Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and senior officials on Wednesday evening. Security had been significantly heightened across the city ahead of his visit, including around Dal Lake and the University of Kashmir campus, with multiple checkpoints and patrols to ensure smooth conduct of the events.
During his stay, the Vice-President also witnessed a cultural programme at Lok Bhavan that showcased traditional folk dances and music of Jammu and Kashmir. He is scheduled to address the University of Kashmir’s convocation ceremony later today.
