Middle eastern nations unite to condemn Israeli airstrikes on Syria

The Israeli offensive, which targeted Syrian forces and weaponry, was ordered by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defence Minister Israel Katz

Amman: A coalition of Middle Eastern countries including Jordan, Qatar, Iran, Kuwait and Saudi Arabia has strongly denounced the recent Israeli airstrikes on Syrian military convoys near the southern city of Sweida, branding them as serious violations of international law and threats to regional stability.

The Israeli offensive, which targeted Syrian forces and weaponry, was ordered by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defence Minister Israel Katz. In a joint statement, they justified the strikes as a move to “prevent the Syrian regime from harming” the Druze community, citing Israel’s “deep fraternal alliance” with Druze citizens and their historic and familial ties with the Druze in Syria.

In response, Jordan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates condemned the airstrikes as a “flagrant violation of international law and a dangerous escalation targeting Syria’s stability, sovereignty and security.” The Ministry’s spokesperson, Ambassador Sufian Al-Qudah, called for an immediate halt to the attacks and emphasised Jordan’s unwavering support for Syria’s sovereignty, territorial integrity, and the safety of its citizens. He reiterated that Syria’s security is crucial to the broader stability of the region.

Qatar also voiced serious concern. Mohammed bin Abdulaziz bin Saleh Al Khulaifi, the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, underscored the importance of preserving Syria’s security, stating that it is integral to regional peace. He condemned the Israeli strikes in As-Suwayda as blatant violations of Syrian sovereignty and international norms, while urging all parties to pursue dialogue and peaceful solutions.

Iran’s Foreign Ministry Spokesman, Esmail Baqaei, expressed alarm over the escalating violence in southern Syria, which reportedly led to dozens of civilian casualties. He condemned Israel’s ongoing military actions and its occupation of parts of Syrian territory. In a statement on X (formerly Twitter), Baqaei criticised the United Nations Security Council’s inaction, suggesting it was emboldening the Israeli regime’s aggressive behaviour.

Kuwait joined the chorus of condemnation, calling upon the international community and the UN Security Council to take decisive action to halt the Israeli violations. The Kuwaiti Foreign Ministry labelled the airstrikes as part of a series of continuing breaches of international law and the UN Charter, reaffirming its solidarity with Syria.

Saudi Arabia also sharply criticised Israel, accusing it of repeated violations of Syrian sovereignty and destabilisation efforts. The Kingdom described the attacks as contrary to international law and the 1974 Disengagement Agreement between Syria and Israel. The Saudi Foreign Ministry urged the global community to support Syria in confronting what it called “ongoing Israeli aggression.”

The widespread condemnation underscores a growing regional consensus against Israeli military interventions in Syria, with multiple nations urging international action to prevent further escalation and to uphold Syrian sovereignty and stability.
