Bandipora: Authorities have suspended multiple forest officials after 18 trees were found to have been illegally axed in the Baduaab block of north Kashmir’s Gurez valley.
The incident came to light during an inspection led by the Range Officer of the Gurez Forest Range. The team discovered that 18 trees had been cut down in forest compartment number 30/T of the Buduab block.
Following the findings, the Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) Bandipora took swift action by suspending the staff members allegedly responsible for negligence. An official inquiry has also been initiated to determine whether there was any deliberate involvement or dereliction of duty.
A senior forest department official confirmed the suspensions and said that protecting forest resources remains a top priority. “Any official found involved in illegal felling or in dereliction of duty will be dealt with strictly,” KNS quoted an official from the department.
The Gurez region, known for its rich biodiversity and fragile ecosystem, has seen growing concerns over illegal logging. Environmentalists have urged the department to enhance patrolling and surveillance to prevent further damage.
