Drass: At least two people lost their lives and 14 others sustained injuries after a vehicle they were travelling in met with an accident near Gumri on the Zojila axis in Drass area of Kargil district on Tuesday.
According to official sources, the mishap occurred when a passenger vehicle skidded off the road and rolled down into a gorge, leading to a tragic scene on the mountainous route. The vehicle was reportedly en route to Kargil from the Kashmir Valley when the incident took place.
Rescue teams, including local police and Army personnel, rushed to the spot and immediately began evacuation efforts. The injured were shifted to a nearby medical facility for treatment.
A senior police official confirmed the casualties and said that a case has been registered to investigate the cause of the accident. He also added that the identity of the deceased is being ascertained.
Frequent accidents on the Zojila stretch, known for its sharp turns and treacherous terrain, continue to pose serious risks to travellers. Authorities have advised drivers to remain cautious, especially during the ongoing monsoon period when road conditions are slippery and visibility is low.
