Srinagar: Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha has reaffirmed that the Union Government remains committed to restoring statehood to Jammu and Kashmir at an “appropriate time.”
Speaking at a function in Srinagar, LG Sinha said the Centre has made a clear promise regarding the restoration of statehood, and that commitment stands firm. “The honourable Home Minister and the Prime Minister have said it in Parliament and on public platforms — Jammu and Kashmir will be granted statehood at an appropriate time. That promise will be kept,” Sinha stated.
He emphasised that the region is witnessing significant transformation and development since the abrogation of Article 370 in August 2019. “The past few years have seen unparalleled progress in infrastructure, education, healthcare, and public services,” the Lieutenant Governor said.
On the issue of Assembly elections, Sinha reiterated that the matter lies entirely with the Election Commission of India. “The decision on when to conduct Assembly polls is solely under the jurisdiction of the Election Commission. The administration will provide full support whenever elections are held,” he added.
Sinha also highlighted the return of peace and stability in the region, citing increased tourist footfall and investment interest. “J&K is steadily moving towards a brighter future. Our focus remains on ensuring good governance, transparency, and development for all,” he said.
The remarks come amid growing public demand for the return of statehood and early elections, which have not been held since the reorganisation of the erstwhile state into a Union Territory in 2019.
Further developments on the timeline for statehood restoration are awaited.
