Kargil: In a significant step towards making public services more accessible, the Regional Passport Office (RPO) Srinagar has launched a special mobile van service in Kargil to provide doorstep passport services for residents of the remote district.
The initiative, which began on Wednesday, will operate for five consecutive days, bringing essential passport facilities directly to the people of Kargil, many of whom face challenges in travelling long distances to avail such services.
The mobile van is equipped with necessary infrastructure to accept and process passport applications on-site. Services include application submissions, biometric data collection, and document verification — all conducted under the supervision of passport officials.
Regional Passport Officer Srinagar, Devansh Yadav, said the aim is to bring governance closer to people and ensure that no citizen is deprived of vital identification services due to geographic barriers. “This initiative is part of the larger vision of the Ministry of External Affairs to enhance outreach and simplify the passport application process, especially for residents of remote and border areas,” Yadav stated.
The deployment of the mobile van has been welcomed by the local population, who have often faced delays and logistical hurdles in accessing passport-related services.
Officials added that the response on the first day was encouraging, with dozens of applicants submitting their forms and completing biometric procedures.
The service will continue at designated locations in Kargil until July 21. Authorities have urged citizens to take full advantage of the facility and ensure all necessary documents are in order for smooth processing.
This outreach is part of the Centre’s broader efforts to promote citizen-centric governance in the Union Territories of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh.
