New Delhi: Tragedy struck in North Delhi’s Burari area on Monday when a van collided with a scooter, resulting in the untimely demise of 52-year-old Asha Mahajan and her 26-year-old son, Kanik Mahajan. Residents of Tomar Colony in Burari, the mother-son duo succumbed to fatal injuries caused by the accident. Additionally, two other individuals, Rinku (30) and Gangaprasad (31), suffered serious injuries in the collision.
The van’s driver, 39-year-old Raju, who operates on a contractual basis between Jahangir Puri metro station and Bahalgar in Haryana, has been apprehended by the police. Raju claimed that he experienced an epileptic episode, leading to a loss of consciousness, which ultimately resulted in the tragic incident. The collision occurred near Khatu Shyam Mandir in Alipur, where Raju had deviated from his usual route due to heavy traffic.
The sequence of events unfolded as the van first collided with the scooter carrying Asha Mahajan and her son, followed by subsequent collisions with two more vehicles and a pedestrian before coming to a halt. Despite Raju’s assertion of an epileptic episode, a medical examination revealed no signs of intoxication, and medicines for treatment were recovered from him.
Kanik Mahajan, employed at an IT firm in Wazirpur, and his homemaker mother were returning home after attending to some errands in the market at the time of the accident. The injured parties, Rinku and Gangaprasad, have pledged their cooperation with the ongoing investigation.
During police interrogation, Raju claimed to have had four passengers during the accident, yet none were found during the subsequent investigation. An FIR has been filed under sections 279 (rash driving or riding on a public way), 337 (causing hurt by an act endangering life or personal safety of others), and 304A (causing death by negligence) of the IPC. The investigation into this tragic incident is currently underway.
