Baramulla: In a distressing turn of events, the dry weather in Kashmir has led to the rampant spread of liver fluke, leaving local sheep farmers in a state of anxiety. District Sheep Husbandry Officer Baramulla, Dr. Showkat, has issued a fervent appeal to farmers, urging them to safeguard their flocks by promptly vaccinating against this perilous disease.
Liver fluke disease, caused by the parasitic flatworm Fasciola hepatica, has witnessed a sudden surge in Kashmir due to the prolonged dry spell, coupled with the absence of anticipated snowfall. The harsh weather conditions have created a conducive environment for the proliferation of liver fluke, posing a severe threat to the region’s livestock.
Dr. Showkat emphasized the urgency of preventive measures, stating, “The dry weather has created an ideal breeding ground for liver fluke, leading to an alarming rise in cases. Farmers must act swiftly to vaccinate their sheep folk and prevent further casualties.” He further revealed that the Sheep Husbandry Department has established a helpline (9682675359) to assist farmers in tackling the situation.
With casualties on the rise, the Sheep Husbandry Department is working tirelessly to contain the spread of the disease and provide necessary support to affected farmers. The situation calls for collective efforts to protect the livelihoods of those dependent on sheep farming in the region.
Farmers are urged to reach out to the helpline for guidance on vaccination procedures and any concerns related to liver fluke. As the region grapples with this unforeseen challenge, a proactive approach from the farming community is crucial to mitigate the impact of liver fluke on Kashmir’s livestock.
