Srinagar: Peoples Conference Chairman Sajad Gani Lone has sharply criticised a recent meeting between Union Minister Kiren Rijiju and senior political leaders from Jammu and Kashmir, including former Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah and the current Chief Minister, believed to be Omar Abdullah.
Taking to social media platform X (formerly Twitter), Lone voiced his disappointment, arguing that the least the Muslim community in India deserved was a gesture of protest from the leadership of Jammu and Kashmir — the country’s only Muslim-majority region.
He said the Chief Minister should have distanced himself from the Union Minister, who recently introduced the controversial Waqf Bill in Parliament. The bill has faced widespread backlash for allegedly threatening the autonomy of Muslim religious institutions.
“The least Muslims of India deserved was that in J&K, the only Muslim-majority province in India, the CM, as a mark of protest, stays away from Mr Kiren Rijiju, who presented the Waqf Bill. Instead, he tags along with Farooq Sahib as well. What a shame,” Lone posted.
His remarks were accompanied by photographs showing Farooq Abdullah and others engaging with Rijiju during what appeared to be a public event.
