Srinagar: The Jammu and Kashmir government is currently evaluating a proposal to provide 12 free LPG cylinders per year to residents, Minister for Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs, Satish Sharma, informed the Assembly on Monday.
Responding to a query from People’s Conference MLA Sajad Gani Lone, Sharma stated that the proposal is under examination and that the government is working towards fulfilling its commitments. Lone had sought clarity on whether the scheme would be implemented and, if so, when it would come into effect.
The initiative, originally promised in the National Conference’s 2014 election manifesto, is aimed at benefiting the Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) in Jammu and Kashmir. While no official timeline has been set, Sharma had previously indicated in November last year that an announcement regarding free LPG cylinders and increased ration allocations was imminent.
According to officials, the government is in the process of finalising the modalities and a formal decision is expected soon.
