President Murmu calls for end to Maoism, praises Chhattisgarh Assembly’s exemplary traditions

President Murmu highlighted the legislative milestones achieved by the Assembly, noting that 565 bills had been passed over the past 25 years.

Raipur: The silver jubilee celebration of the Chhattisgarh Legislative Assembly marked a significant moment as President Droupadi Murmu called for the eradication of Maoism while applauding the state’s democratic journey over the past 25 years. Addressing the gathering in Raipur on Monday, President Murmu began with “Jai Johar!” and congratulated the Assembly on its 25th anniversary. She reflected on the state’s formation under the leadership of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and paid tribute to his visionary role in establishing Chhattisgarh.

The President praised the Assembly for maintaining high standards of parliamentary conduct, highlighting its unique rule of automatic suspension for members who disrupt proceedings by entering the well of the House. She noted that in 25 years, the marshal has never been required to enforce order, demonstrating the Assembly’s unwavering commitment to discipline and decorum. This exemplary adherence to democratic traditions, she said, sets a benchmark for legislative bodies across India.

Emphasising the importance of women’s empowerment, President Murmu urged the 19 women MLAs in the Assembly to lead efforts towards inclusive development and align with the objectives of the ‘Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam’. She also paid tribute to “Mini Mata”, the first woman Member of Parliament from Chhattisgarh, describing her as an enduring inspiration for aspiring women leaders. Acknowledging the state’s healthy sex ratio and the significant contributions of women in various sectors, she advocated for further collective efforts to empower them.

President Murmu highlighted the legislative milestones achieved by the Assembly, noting that 565 bills had been passed over the past 25 years. Many of these bills focused on social welfare and inclusive development, including landmark legislation addressing harassment and combating deeply ingrained stereotypes. She commended the Assembly’s commitment to fostering progress and ensuring the welfare of marginalised communities.

A key theme of the celebration was the call to eradicate Maoism. President Murmu expressed optimism that ongoing efforts to integrate individuals affected by Left-wing extremism into mainstream society have reached a critical and decisive phase. She noted that communities in Maoist-affected areas are increasingly eager to embrace development and progress. “I firmly believe that your unwavering dedication will soon lead to the complete eradication of extremism from Chhattisgarh, paving the way for a transformative chapter in the state’s history,” she stated.

Highlighting Chhattisgarh’s immense economic potential, President Murmu acknowledged the state’s contributions to industries such as cement, steel, minerals, power generation, and traditional crafts, which have gained global recognition. She also underscored the importance of balancing industrial growth with ecological preservation, celebrating the natural beauty of the state, enriched by rivers such as the Mahanadi, Hasdeo, Indravati, and Shivnath.

President Murmu concluded her address by expressing confidence in Chhattisgarh’s ability to uphold the ideals of fairness and unity, inspired by the teachings of Guru Ghasidas. She asserted that the Legislative Assembly will continue to be a driving force for comprehensive development, positioning Chhattisgarh as a model state that blends tradition, progress, and inclusivity. With unwavering faith in its future, she expressed hope that Chhattisgarh is poised to embark on a transformative chapter in its history.
